Jean-Claude Juncker: Macron ‘a signal of hope for Europe’
French leader’s policy agenda will help ‘promote Europe,’ Commission president said.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called French President Emmanuel Macron “a signal of hope for Europe” and declared that Brexit would only “show how much more attractive it is to be a member of our Union,” in an interview with Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten.
“This is a positive signal for Europe,” Juncker said of Macron’s election, “a signal of hope.”
In the interview, published Saturday, Juncker said that he was certain he would work well with the new French president because they share policy goals.
“We have already noted that we have many objectives in common — from a European defense policy to a more social Europe, to the strengthening of the monetary and economic union,” Juncker said. “This is the positive agenda heads of state and government have agreed to promote Europe. I will now work with them and with President Macron.”
On the U.K.’s departure from the bloc, Juncker expressed confidence that other members of the EU would not want to leave after watching the British experience.
“Brexit will show how much more attractive it is to be a member of our Union,” Juncker said.
“Thanks to Europe, people enjoy the freedom to live, buy, love and trade across borders,” he added. “We also achieve more security and prosperity together. Specific examples are the European Border and Coast Guard Agency and our common currency area.”
