Green light to open air transport talks with Georgia

EU transport ministers have given the European Commission the green light to open negotiations with Georgia on a comprehensive air transport agreement.

The Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council meeting on 11-12 June adopted a decision granting the
Commission the mandate to start talks. The agreement aims at mutually opening the respective markets where air carriers can freely provide their services on the basis of commercial principles and be able to compete on a fair and equal basis.

The agreement is in line with efforts towards developing a wider European Common Aviation Area by 2010
incorporating EU neighbouring countries. It is also in line with the EU-Georgia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and follows the conclusions of the Extraordinary European Council, held in September 2008 to step up relations with Georgia and create a free trade area as
soon as conditions are met.
