Swoboda slams EPP for endorsing neo-Nazi as Hungarian Parliament vice-president
An overwhelming right-wing majority, including all but four MPs from Fidesz – a member of the European People’s Party – this afternoon voted for Jobbik MP Tamás Sneider to become the deputy speaker of the Hungarian Parliament. Tamás Sneider, founder of the skinhead gang ‘Association of National Youth’ has previously been convicted for brutally beating a Roma person, an incident he himself described as “slapping a gypsy mafioso”.
Hannes Swoboda, president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, commented on the vote:
“This vote is a disgrace. The Hungarian Parliament can now be chaired by someone who unapologetically assaults minorities.
“The EPP – the political group of Jean-Claude Juncker and Angela Merkel – seem to think it is acceptable to hand out important posts to convicted criminals and racists. This definition of democracy is not compatible with the European values the EPP claims to adhere to.
“I call on the EPP group to explain in what way this vote reflects their supposed commitment to diversity and the protection of minorities. Their members had the power to reject this shameful nomination – but they chose not to.”
